Financial Professional Content Subsidized Stafford loans used to be a sweet deal for aid-eligible college students. Payments were deferred during the college years at a 0% interest rate, and repayment after college carried a fixed interest rate of only 3.4%. Well, the deal isn't so sweet any more. As of July 1 the post-college interest rate jumped from 3.4% to 6.8%. Here's what you need to know when talking to clients wondering about what's going on and how the rate change will affect them. Pre-existing student loans are not affected by the rate hike. The new interest rate of 6.8% applies to subsidized Stafford loans taken out for the 2013-14 school year. It's interesting to note that unsubsidized Stafford loans (for students who cannot demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA) also carry a 6.8% interest rate. The primary advantage of being need-eligible is that interest is effectively waived until after graduation. Something will probably be done to change the situation. Several different proposals were advanced in Washington prior to the rate hike taking effect. Although partisan politics make it difficult to reach consensus, intense pressure directed at Congress and the President to come up with a "solutionï ¿ ½ will likely result in a new interest-rate formula. Any such law will likely be made retroactive to July 1, 2013. Stafford loans are not as important in financing college as many people believe. For instance, the most that a dependent student can get in subsidized Stafford loans for the freshman year in college is $3,500. Another $2,000 in unsubsidized Stafford loans can be taken out. Many parents use federal PLUS loans to pay the college expenses that are not financed with Stafford loans, and PLUS loans carry an interest rate of 7.9%. How attractive is a PLUS loan at 7.9% when home equity loans can be obtained by many families at lower cost? I recommend the article "The Federal Parent Rip-Off Loan" by Kevin Carey for further insight into PLUS loans. If they can avoid it, your clients should not want to see their children or themselves taking on massive debt for college. For most, avoiding loans during the college years requires that they save for college now, while the child is still young. If you want to demonstrate this concept to your clients, try out the 529 Savings Vs. Loans Calculator on Savingforcollege.com. I just did, running the numbers for a 5-year old, and using all the calculator's other default settings. It tells me that the total amount of monthly contributions needed to pay for a four-year degree is $114,973. But if I had no college savings, and paid for college completely through loans, my total loan repayment would come to $257,360. How's that for a persuasive argument in favor of saving for college? Aggregate Demand and Supply Models Economic Critique Ken Drake, ECO 372 Macroeconomics September 10, 2012 Jason Foster Aggregate Demand and Supply Models Economic Critique In the United States the economy is currently in a recession, although signs are indicating that the economy is slowly recovering. In an effort to analyze the Unites States economy the unemployment rate, expectations, consumer income, and interest rates have been evaluated. The results of these evaluations are included in this report. Unemployment in the United States fell to 8.1% from 8.3% in July. U.S. employers are said to have added 96,000 jobs in July (KSL News, Sept) . According to reports from the department of workforce services the†¦show more content†¦Just like looking for a good time to buy into a stock, a person needs to look at several months of data to find a consistent pattern of troughs and peaks in the supply and demand wave, draw a line to mark out floor and ceiling, and then buy your stocks as the price climbs and sell before it reaches the top. Expectation can now be based on past events laid out in a reoccurring pattern. There is still some guesswork involved however, but not like it was in the past. The downward spiral of the United States economy can be caused by different factors. For example, record high gas prices and sub prime mortgage loans are tow key contributors. With the United States gas prices and unemployment rates at an all time high, it is no secret why consumers naturally spend less money. Consumers are using more money for their gas tanks just to get to work everyday, and the though of going on vacation or shopping is just a dream now for most. A higher price level reduces the purchasing power of the publics accumulated savings account balances (Aggregate demand and aggregate supply, 2012). Timeless Relations free essay sample

Timeless Relations A ray of light shone through the slit of my eyelids causing a slight pain. As I opened my eyes and my pupils struggled to adjust to the light, a Blue Angel ripped through the sky above me with incomprehensible speed. I watched my mother and father conversing on the aft of the boat while my sisters, giggling together, dangled their legs over the bow. Countless boats, filled with families and friends enjoying each other’s company, anchored in Lake Erie around us. Another Angel soared past, causing a belated but nevertheless deafening sound. I thought about how much the world has changed, how quickly it moves, and how little we, as humans, enjoy the one thing time cannot alter: relationships. Pilots in their jets flew by at high-speeds with instantaneous altitude changes and swift turns. They traveled fast, faster than any human being or aircraft ever manufactured before. We will write a custom essay sample on Timeless Relations or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The other spectators and I stared on. At that moment, our lives seemed comparatively uneventful and slow. These people of practical affairs, casually, joyfully, and whole-heartedly listened to each other as the airborne acrobats performed above. How simple these times seemed compared to the trials, training, and skills required of the men hundreds of feet above traveling at record breaking speeds. As a passing Blue Angel reached supersonic speed, my life seemed to slow down. I realized the beauty of time, especially time spent with others. Just as the Blue Angels speed by, so do our daily lives. Technology stresses speed and instant gratification. Cell phones have taken once heartfelt, genuine goodbyes and turned them into triple character text messages, such as â€Å"cya!† People have personal connections through cyberspace. They no longer have conversations, but rather exchange voicemail transactions. Companies advertise faster service, next day installation, on demand vide os, and high-speed internet on the go. While lying on the boat rocking us back and forth, I marveled over society today. What happened to friendly consumer service, quality installation, and a genuine desire to make others happy? Everything now originates from convenience rather than from devoting our priceless time to others and to building lifelong relationships. Lifestyles change with time. Technology, language, music, and fashion, they all change. But one thing that never will change is people and their relationships. Parents love their children the same in contemporary times as they did thousands of years ago. Likewise, children now and children of medieval periods love their parents equally. A common connection among our world’s cultures is interpersonal connections. One era is connected to another by relationships. Romance novels, such as Gone with the Wind, are timeless stories with which all people can relate. Friends and family have played significant roles in our lives for centuries; however we do not appreciate them enough. Why not treasure the one thing time has not changed? Humans will always need love, affection, and understanding. A thunderous sound roared around me. The Blue Angels passed overhead, this time together. I sat up and rested my back against a life-line on the side of the boat. The six Solos assembled into their standard diamond formation to form a family of aircraft. They flew as one unit performing barrel rolls and flips. I felt sorrow as the air show approached its end, yet renewed by my fresh outlook on the world. I stood up to join my sisters at the bow and sat beside them. They turned, their eyes met mine and I smiled. Eager not to be excluded a moment more from my family, I added a comment and contributed to the laughter filling the front of the boat. I kicked my feet back and forth as my sisters did. Our six legs moved forward and back in unison as the six Angels flew past together one last time.

The True Story Of Creation. Religion Or Science Essays

The True Story Of Creation. Religion Or Science? The True Story of Creation ? Religion or Science? For centuries, the battle has been raging between science and religion over the question of how man came into being. The two opposing forces have clashed countless times in history, with such violent conflicts as to result in bloodshed and death. Probably the most controversial issue debated by the two sides is the creation of everything in the universe, from stars and planets to plants and people. Christians use the Bible, specifically the book of Genesis, to support their belief of creation, while scientists support their ideas with observational data and mathematical calculations. Although the Bible provides a credible explanation for the origin of Earth and its life forms, the scientific perspective of creation presents a thorough explanation of the beginnings of the Earth and man with more information and evidence. Using the book of Genesis as support, devout Christians believe that God is the creator of the universe. As it is plainly stated in the first verse of the Bible, ?In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,? (Genesis 1:1). God also created everything on the earth, including water, land, plants, and animals. The first humans, Adam and Eve, were made by God ?in his own image?male and female created he them,? (Genesis 1:27). Even the concepts of day and night and seasons and years were of divine origin (Genesis 1:14). All of these objects and ideas were created in the course of six days, and all were formed by the work of God. On the other hand, believers in science take a completely different approach in explaining the origin of the universe. Although there is more than one theory, the most popular today is the concept of the big bang, in which an explosion sent debris through space that eventually formed the universe as it is now. The earth, along with the other planets, was formed from the debris of the big bang, but only after billions of years did it look like it does today. Scientists believe life began as a single-cell life form hundreds of millions of years ago, and after millions of years evolved into the plants and animals of today. Humans did not come into existence until a few thousand years ago, evolving from an ape-like species. Of the two explanations, the scientific theory seems to have more evidence of being truth than does the religious theory. First of all, the Bible is thought to be written by Moses (with divine inspiration), but nobody can prove this as his name is mentioned nowhere as the author. In addition, the Bible tells nothing of the expanse of the universe, or even of any other planets, but only mentions objects visible by the human eye, such as the sun, moon, and stars. Omitting those ?invisible? objects suggests that the author had access to only the scope of human knowledge at the time. As the Bible leaves the unexplained to the handiwork of God, science tries to explain the unexplained. Over many years, science has come up with evidence to support their theories of creation. For example, judging by the position and motion of stars in the sky, scientists have discovered that the universe is expanding, which could be the result the big bang sending matter outward through space. The motion of the stars also implies that the age of the universe is greater than that of the earth by several billions of years, while the Bible suggests that the two entities were created at the same time. Furthermore, the discovery of fossils and bones underneath the earth's surface present proof of early life forms ? especially dinosaurs, which are never mentioned in the book of Genesis ? and carbon-dating techniques confirm some of these bones to be millions of years old. Clearly, the scientific argument on the creation issue is backed by more concrete evidence than the writings of the Bible. Still, the presentation of scientific data does not necessarily imply truth; the Bible, although backed by the belief in its divine origin, can very well be the true account of creation. Human nature, however, tends to believe more in concrete and visible objects.

Levinsons Seasons of Man

Levinsons Seasons of Man IntroductionBackgroundIn May of 1977, Daniel Levinson constructed a model of the season's of a mans life. His developmental theory consists of universal stages or phases that extends from the infancy state to the elderly state. Most development theories, such as Freud's psychosexual development theory or Piaget's cognitive development theory, end in the adolescent stage of life. Levinson's stage theory is important because it goes beyond most theories assuming that development continues throughout adult life.Levinson based his model on biographical interviews of 40 American men. These 40 men were between 35 to 45 years in age and they worked as either biology professors, novelists, business executives or industrial laborers. The biographical interviews lasted one or two hours and ranged from six to ten interviews for each subject. The questions asked focused on the subject's life accounts in their post adolescent years. The interviews focused on topics such as the men's background (e ducation, religion, political beliefs) and major events or turning points in their lives.Ambassador Visit to the Weizmann InstituteLevinson's concept of life structure (the men's socio-cultural world, their participation in their world and various aspects of themselves) is the major component in Levinson's theory. The life structure for each person evolves through the developmental stages as people's age.Two key concepts in Levinson's model are the stable period and the transitional period in a person's development. The stable period is the time when a person makes crucial choices in life, builds a life structure around the choices and seeks goals within the structure. The transitional period is the end of a person's stage and the beginning of a new stage.Levinson's model contains five main stages. They are the pre-adulthood stage (age 0 - 22), the early adulthood stage (age 17 - 45), the middle adult stage (age 40 - 65), the late...

Western Civilization. The Second World War Essay

Western Civilization. The Second World War - Essay Example In the months and days prior to the war, tension had built up all over the country. As a newly appointed general and having had my father participate in the First World War, I was equally tense and concerned not only about my safety, but that of my squadron as well. When the looming war finally broke, initial orders conveyed to me and other generals expressly instructed us to lead our troops to invade Poland. This was one of the cruellest acts I have ever witnessed because innocent farmers were forced to relinquish their food supply and horses to the soldiers because they were needed for the war effort. Additionally, old people and veterans of the World War were recalled to the battle field. After the first two days, all the generals including me got assigned to diverse tasks meant to ensure that, the war was going as planned. I got the task of assigning the veterans to their specified areas of responsibility. I instructed them to head to the Hellnthal area and protect the border to the west; it was sad, yet challenging to see the old veterans rise up to serve their nation again after diligently doing the same during the previous war. The recalling of veterans and billeting them in the available castles, in Drreibor, was done hurriedly because France and England had declared war on Germany (Cole, Symes, Coffin, and Stacey 520). The weather was getting cold toward the conclusion of the Poland campaign. I remember ordering some young soldiers to replace the veterans in the castles, because the winter had a lot of snow, as well as, frost and some of the old soldiers could not handle the weather. After one year in the war, another campaign was launched and we were ordered to attack Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Holland. This is when we lost one of our planes near a dynamo generator house and the troops had to embark on travelling on railroad tracks. Other than railroads’ development, there was immense improvement of the aircrafts, which contributed to some of the major conquests in the war. The campaign lasted for six weeks and we emerged successful although, sadly, we lost a lot of men on the battle field. In 1941, the Battle of Britain began and this is when I was ordered to direct one thousand planes to raid the British (Cole et al 561). There were more casualties but as a general, one is not supposed to show weakness or pity for the enemy, but I can attest and say that this was the most difficult time in my life. I not only lost comrades, but many civilians died during the attacks as well. Additionally, about two young men were dying every day on the battle field and almost every night there were air raid. This is when I started to see people building shelters in their gardens although there was acute shortage in raw materials. It was a major development, since it showed growing innovation among civilians and it was also indicative of the people’s capacity to optimally utilize resources. It was not until 1944 that we start ed to launch attacks with the help of our allies, but despite our efforts to maintain our dominance over France, Paris got liberated. This is when the attacks got intense and we were losing so many people to the battle. Railroads and tunnels got destroyed and many boys and girls were taken to make the Westwall entrenchment, a highly difficult and perilous task (Cole 603). Even though the situation was deplorable and I did not want to exploit the young children, I had no choice but to follow orders and try to protect the civilians from continued deaths. I was also under immense pressure to guide my squadron in improving our weaponry cache, since the Americans had more civilized war machines. This brought about major improvements in the military.

Apart from this, appropriate ethical conducts also need to be followed within the organization within its entire hierarchical process so as to enhance the productivity of the organization in the market among other rivals. So that, he might remain ethical at the time of tough situation, that is extremely essential on the part of an officer or manager of an organization. This is because the officer or CEO of the organization is just as the driver or controller of an engine, who drives the car or organization in accurate way (Warren & Fassett, 2010). But if, he or she follows the wrong path then the entire organization might move in wrong way resulting in is downfall among all other organizations. So, it is

Analysis from InfoPlease Essay Example for Free

Analysis from InfoPlease Essay I am going to present to you through out this paper the history of the Iraq War and the many opposing views as to why the war should of never been, you will find many quotes and facts. Analysis from InfoPlease â€Å"The Second Persian Gulf War,. also known as the Iraq War, Mar. –Apr. , 2003, was a largely U. S. -British invasion of Iraq. In many ways the final, delayed campaign of the First Persian Gulf War, it arose in part because the Iraqi government failed to cooperate fully with UN weapons inspections in the years following the first conflict. † (Infoplease) â€Å"The election of George W. Bush to the U. S. presidency returned to government many officials from his fathers administration who had favored removing Saddam Hussein from power in the first war. After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the United States moved toward a doctrine of first-strike, pre-emptive war to eliminate threats to national security. As early as Oct. , 2001, U. S. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld publicly suggested that military action against Iraq was possible, and in November President Bush asked Rumsfeld to undertake a war-plan review. In Jan. , 2002, President Bush accused Iraq. along with North Korea and Iran, as being part of â€Å"an axis of evil,† and with the Taliban forced from power in Afghanistan in early 2002, the administrations attention turned to Iraq. † (Infoplease) â€Å"Accusing Iraq of failing to abide by the terms of the 1991 cease-fire (by developing and possessing weapons of mass destruction and by refusing to cooperate with UN weapons inspections) and of supporting terrorism, the president and other officials suggested that the â€Å"war on terrorism† might be expanded to include Iraq and became more forceful in their denunciations of Iraq for resisting UN arms inspections, called for â€Å"regime change† in Iraq, and leaked news of 2 military planning for war. President Bush also called on the United Nations to act forcefully against Iraq or risk becoming â€Å"irrelevant. † As a result, Iraq announced in Sept. , 2002, that UN inspectors could return, but Iraqi slowness to agree on inspection terms and U. S. insistence on stricter conditions for Iraqi compliance stalled the inspectors return. † (Infoplease) â€Å"In October, Congress approved the use of force against Iraq, and in November the Security Council passed a resolution offering Iraq a â€Å"final opportunity† to cooperate on arms inspections. A strict inspections timetable was established, and active Iraqi compliance insisted on. Inspections resumed in late November. A December declaration by Iraq that it had no weapons of mass destruction was generally regarded as incomplete and uninformative, but by Jan. , 2003, UN inspectors had found no evidence of forbidden weapons programs. However, they also indicated that Iraq was not actively cooperating with their efforts to determine if previously known or suspected weapons had been destroyed and weapons programs had been ended. Despite much international opposition, including increasingly rancorous objections from France, Germany, and Russia, the United States and Britain continued their military buildup in areas near Iraq, insisting that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction. Turkey, which the allies hoped to use as a base for a northern front in Iraq, refused to allow use of its territory, but most Anglo-American forces were in place in Kuwait and other locations by March. After failing to win the explicit UN Security Council approval desired by Britain (because Britons were otherwise largely opposed to war), President Bush issued an ultimatum to Iraqi president Hussein on Mar. 17, and two days later the war began with an airstrike against Hussein and the Iraqi leadership. Ground forces (almost exclusively Anglo-American and significantly smaller than the large international force assembled in the first war) began invading the following day, surging primarily toward Baghdad, the southern oil fields, and port facilities; a northern front was opened by Kurdish and airborne Anglo-American forces late in March. † (Infoplease) 3 â€Å"By mid-April, 2003, Husseins army and government had collapsed, he himself had disappeared, and the allies were largely in control of the major Iraqi cities. The allies gradually turned their attention to the rebuilding of Iraq and the establishment of a new Iraqi government, but progress toward that end was hampered by lawlessness, especially in Baghdad, where widespread looting initially had been tolerated by U. S. forces. † (Infoplease) â€Å"On May 1, President Bush declared victory in the war against Iraq. No weapons of mass destruction, however, were found, leading to charges that U. S. and British leaders had exaggerated the Iraqi biological and chemical threat in order to justify the war. Hussein was captured in Dec. , 2003. Subsequently, much of the intelligence used to justify the war was criticized as faulty by U. S. and British investigative bodies, and the U. S. -led occupation forces struggled into 2005 with Islamic insurgencies that military and civilian planners had failed to foresee. † (Infoplease)

Puritan Hypocrisy Exposed in Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter E

Puritan Hypocrisy Exposed in The Scarlet Letter   Ã‚   Throughout The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne repeatedly portrays the Puritanical views of sin and evil.   The Puritans are constantly displayed as believing that evil comes from an unyielding bond being formed between love and hate.   For such reasons they looked towards Hester's commitment of adultery as an action of pure, condemned evil.   However, through the use of light and dark imagery, Hawthorne displays who truly holds evil in their hearts.   The one who is the embodiment of evil creates hypocrisy of Puritanical views towards sin and evil.   Hawthorne displays that those who expose sin to the public and the daylight are the most pure and those who conceal their sin under a dark shadow are destined to be defeated.   Through his use of light and dark imagery and the contrast of his beliefs versus the beliefs of the Puritans, Hawthorne exposes the hypocritical beliefs of the Puritans by portraying Dimmesdale as destined for demise for concealing his sin, and ironically Hester the most pure for admitting her sin.   Ã‚  Ã‚   The first description of Dimmesdale that Hawthorne presents to the reader is of Dimmesdale hiding his sin.   One Puritan says, speaking of Hester's sin, "Reverend Master Dimmesdale, her godly pastor, takes it very grievously to heart that such a scandal have come upon his congregation" (38).   Immediately, Dimmesdale is shown to the readers as not only concealing his sin, but also being hypocritical in his condemnation of a sin that he himself has also committed.   On the very same page, Hawthorne speaks of the "dismal severity of the Puritanic code of law" (38).   From the beginning of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses dismal, a dark and evil ... ... thing that frees one of evil and shame is revealing his sin.   Hawthorne foreshadows the death and demise of Dimmesdale from the beginning of the book by keeping him cast in a dark shadow with an aching heart.   Hester was continuously condemned for her sin, although it was revealed through the light constantly burning upon her chest.   This illustrates the hypocrisy of the Puritan beliefs towards sin, for it was he who concealed his sin that was destined to be defeated by his ignominy, and she who was explicitly condemned that prospers and grows and is able to live a full, didactic life.    Sources Hawthorne, Nathaniel.   The Scarlet Letter.   New York: Penguin Putnam Inc., 1980. Three Lifelines of the American Tree - 957 Words

Three lifelines of the American tree The political scenario in America consists of three institutions- the Congress (legislative), President (executive) and the Supreme Court (judiciary) which acts as safeguards to counterbalance each other. The appearance of the congress has changed significantly since Independence. At its beginning it consisted of a party of Federalists who believed in maintaining a strong central government while it now consists of the Republican and Democratic parties served by self-serving â€Å"career† politicians guided by the interest of their districts over the country. â€Å"Government created because of the passion of men does not conform to dictates of reason and justice†. (Hamilton) Alexander Hamilton was a†¦show more content†¦Supreme court (Judiciary)- During the federalist era the judiciary was considered as the weakest of the three branches with â€Å"no influence over either the sword or purse†.(Hamilton) But over a period of time the judiciary has strengthened its position as far as being a protector of constitutional rights. For example Marbury vs. Madison was a landmark case in which the judiciary defined a clear boundary between the executive and itself. It termed a law passed by government unconstitutional. Although it could not directly influence laws it’s judgment’s in the slavery case Dredd Scott vs. Sanford (1857) paved the way for the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments in the constitution written specifically to overturn the decision of giving people the right to own slaves. The Supreme Cou rt flexed its muscles the most during Roosevelt’s time during which it opposed many of the â€Å"new deal† economic reforms he enacted. This was one of the examples where the decisions of the court had a wider impact on policy making. Although Roosevelt ultimately succeeded it showed how the courts could use the constitution to question the authority of the executive. The Supreme Court protects individual rights. For example in Roe vs. Wade the constitutional right to privacy extends to a womans decision to have an abortion.
